Enormous amounts of beautiful and good materials are thrown away in the world today. ATTER is a series of cushions based on materials I believe deserve a second chance. The covers are made from high-quality upholstery fabrics that would otherwise be discarded—dead stock textile samples or scraps too small to be used in larger products. The inner cushions are made from recycled feathers and down from duvets and pillows – collected, cleaned, and prepared for new years of use by Norsk Dun. The cushions are designed and handmade by me and no two are exactly alike.
My grandmother never threw anything away. When a piece of clothing was patched so many times that it could no longer be saved; could the least worn part still be used to repair something else? This way of thinking comes from a world where material resources were more precious than time. For a long time, we’ve lived in a (part of the) world with the opposite rules. But with a future with increased pressure on the earth’s resources, we may be forced to let ourselves be inspired by the generations before us and their ability to – and pride in – seeing value in remnants and broken things?
